The Udzungwa Mountains are unlike anywhere else on Tanzania's safari circuit: there are no roads for game drives here, only trails. It's part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient rainforest-covered ranges often nicknamed the "Galapagos of Africa" for how much of its plant and animal life exists nowhere else on Earth. Elevation runs from around 300m at the forest edge to over 2,500m at the highest peaks, which packs six distinct vegetation zones, from lowland rainforest to montane grassland, into a single park.
Sitting close to Mikumi, it's an easy add-on for travellers who want a rainforest hike alongside their savanna game drives rather than another day in a vehicle. Every visit is guided and on foot, which keeps the forest quiet and makes it a genuinely different kind of day compared to the rest of a Tanzania itinerary.

The park headquarters at Mang'ula is roughly 6 hours from Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, or about 1.5–2 hours on from Mikumi, making it a natural add-on rather than a separate long trip.
Most visitors add Udzungwa onto a Mikumi itinerary rather than visiting on its own, splitting the trip between game drives and a rainforest hike.
A licensed park guide is required for every trail and is arranged on the day at park headquarters, along with your park entry permit.
We don't currently list a standalone Udzungwa package, since almost everyone visits it as a rainforest add-on to a southern-circuit itinerary.
