Tour Overview

Tanzania's wild southern circuit,
far from the crowds

This twelve-day trip goes deep into Tanzania's southern circuit, a vast stretch of wilderness that sees a fraction of the visitors the north does. Around a waterhole here, you're often more likely to be sharing it with elephants than with other vehicles. You'll track lion and elephant herds along the Great Ruaha River, cruise the Rufiji in Nyerere National Park looking for hippo, crocodile and African wild dogs, and cross Mikumi's open floodplains under the Uluguru Mountains. After nine days in the bush, the trip closes with two nights on Zanzibar's beaches.

When to take this safari

June to October is the classic dry season here: vegetation thins out, wildlife concentrates along the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers, and game viewing tends to be at its most consistent. December to February is also a solid window, with far fewer visitors than the northern circuit sees. The long rains from March to May bring lush, green scenery and the lowest rates of the year, though some walking safaris and remote camps scale back during this period.
