Overview

Tanzania's most
accessible major park

Mikumi is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park and, thanks to a paved road from Dar es Salaam, by far the easiest to reach. It sits just north of Nyerere National Park, separated only by the Uluguru Mountains, and is part of the same broader Selous ecosystem. The heart of the park is the Mkata Floodplain, an open grassland that concentrates wildlife in a way people often compare to a smaller, quieter Serengeti, with noticeably fewer vehicles at any given sighting than you'd find up north.

Highlights

What you'll see

Elephant herds

Large family groups move across the floodplain, especially in the dry season.

Lion and giraffe

Both are regularly seen, along with zebra and wildebeest on the open grass.

African wild dogs

A rare sighting anywhere, and one of Mikumi's more special ones when it happens.

Buffalo and impala

Common on the plains and a reliable part of most game drives.

Greater kudu and sable

Less common elsewhere, both antelope species turn up in Mikumi's woodland fringes.

Yellow baboons

Mikumi's baboon troops are among the most studied in East Africa, and easy to watch at close range.

Birdlife

Over 400 recorded species; the dry season favours raptors and waterbirds, November to February favours migrants.

Waterhole congregations

In the dry season, hippo pools along the Mkata River draw in elephant, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest together.

Getting There

The easiest southern park
to reach

By road

The TANZAM Highway runs directly through the park, so the drive from Dar es Salaam via Morogoro is a straightforward 4–5 hours on sealed road, no detours onto rough tracks required.

By air

Charter flights connect Mikumi with Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Nyerere, useful if you're combining parks rather than driving between them.

By bus

Local buses run from Dar es Salaam to the park headquarters, a slower but noticeably cheaper option if you're not on a tight schedule.

Safaris Featuring Mikumi

Ways to visit

These two are our current standing itineraries, but Mikumi combines easily with Ruaha, Nyerere, or a shorter 3–5 day southern-circuit route at a lower price point than our 12-day itinerary. If neither option fits your dates or budget, tell us what you have in mind and we'll put together something shorter.

Ready When You Are

Add Mikumi
to your trip

Tell us your dates and where else you're headed, and we'll work out whether Mikumi fits best as a day trip or part of a longer southern circuit.
