Overview

Tanzania's largest park,
and one of its quietest

Ruaha became Tanzania's largest national park after a 2008 boundary expansion, and sits at a meeting point between East and Southern African ecosystems: you'll find species here, like the greater kudu and roan antelope, that don't range further north. The park is built around the Great Ruaha River, which draws in wildlife hard during the dry season, against a backdrop of baobab-studded hills. Despite the scale of the place, Ruaha sees a fraction of the visitors that the northern circuit does.

Highlights

What you'll see

Large elephant herds

Ruaha holds one of the biggest elephant populations of any Tanzanian park.

African wild dogs

One of the more reliable places in East Africa to see this endangered predator.

The Great Ruaha River

In the dry season, riverbed pools become a magnet for game, easy to watch from a vehicle for hours.

Ancient baobabs

Some of the park's baobab trees are believed to be well over a thousand years old.

Southern species

Greater kudu, roan and sable antelope, species rarely seen on a northern circuit safari.

Genuinely remote

Small camps, few vehicles at any sighting, and long stretches without seeing another vehicle at all.

Getting There

By air

Scheduled light-aircraft flights connect Ruaha's Msembe and Jongomero airstrips with Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Arusha, typically 1.5–2 hours depending on route.

By road

A long overland drive is possible from Iringa, but most visitors fly in given the distance from other circuits.

Ways to visit

Ruaha isn't currently part of a shorter standalone package, mostly because of the flight time involved. If you'd like a dedicated Ruaha-only itinerary, tell us your dates and we'll design one.
