Tour Overview

Spice-scented streets and
turquoise water, seven days apart

This one is a getaway, not a game drive. Two nights in Stone Town come first, wandering its narrow lanes and the spice gardens just outside town, then four nights unwinding on the white sand and turquoise water of Michamvi Beach on the island's east coast. Expect heritage walks, spice tastings, a sunset dhow cruise, and long, slow days by the Indian Ocean after that.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your seven days on the island

1

Arrival in Zanzibar

Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, where you're met and transferred to your heritage hotel in the heart of Stone Town. The evening is free: wander the old town's narrow streets, or find a rooftop bar overlooking the harbour for a sunset drink.

🏨 Overnight: Kiponda Heritage House
2

Stone Town Heritage Walk & Spice Farm Tour

Explore Stone Town on foot with a local guide, taking in the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, and the site of the former slave market, a sobering stop on an otherwise light day. In the afternoon, head into the countryside for a spice farm tour, tasting cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom grown on the island.

🏨 Overnight: Kiponda Heritage House
3

Prison Island Excursion & Transfer to Michamvi

A short boat ride takes you to Prison Island (Changuu), home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, with time to snorkel the surrounding reef. In the afternoon, transfer across the island to Michamvi Beach on Zanzibar's quieter east coast.

🏨 Overnight: Baraza Beach Retreat
4

Michamvi Beach at Leisure

A full free day at the resort, with its white sand beach and calm, shallow lagoon. If you'd rather stay active, kayaking, paddleboarding and diving trips to nearby reefs are all available as optional add-ons.

🏨 Overnight: Baraza Beach Retreat
5

Sunset Dhow Cruise & Snorkelling

Set sail on a traditional wooden dhow along the reef-fringed coastline, with time to snorkel over the coral gardens before heading back to shore as the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean.

🏨 Overnight: Baraza Beach Retreat
6

Free Day or Jozani Forest Excursion

Choose a final restful day at the beach, or take an optional half-day excursion to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park to walk among rare red colobus monkeys and mangrove boardwalks before returning for a relaxed evening.

When to take this trip

Zanzibar stays warm and tropical year-round, but June through October and late December through February bring the driest, sunniest weather and the calmest seas for dhow cruises and snorkelling. The short rains in November tend to be brief, often just a dramatic afternoon sky and then it clears. The long rains from March to May bring the lowest rates of the year, along with heavier and more frequent showers.
