Tour Overview

Chasing the herds across
Tanzania's wild north

This seven-day trip is built around the Great Wildebeest Migration, tracing a route from Tarangire's baobab plains through the Serengeti's Central Seronera Valley and out to the Mara River crossing points in the far north. You'll pass through some of Tanzania's richest predator territory along the way, and your driver-guide follows daily migration reports to put you where the herds are likely to be. Crossings depend on rainfall and herd movement, so timing is never guaranteed, but this route gives you a strong shot at seeing one.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your seven days following the herds

1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives south-west to Tarangire National Park. After lunch, you'll head out for an afternoon game drive through baobab country, following the areas where the park's elephant herds tend to gather.

🏨 Overnight: Tarangire River Tented Camp (Comfort)
2

Tarangire to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, it's on to the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Highlands and the Naabi Hill gate, with a game drive worked into the drive. You'll reach camp in the Seronera area in time for a sundowner.

🏨 Overnight: Seronera Plains Tented Camp (Comfort)
3

Full-Day Central Serengeti Game Drives

The full day is spent in the Seronera Valley, one of the more reliable parts of the Serengeti for wildlife year-round. Look out for lion prides, leopards resting in sausage trees, and buffalo and antelope herds.

🏨 Overnight: Seronera Plains Tented Camp (Comfort)
4

Central to Northern Serengeti

You'll drive north toward the Mara River, with your guide checking migration movements along the way. Camp for the next two nights is near Kogatende, in the Northern Serengeti, one of the quieter corners of the park.

🏨 Overnight: Mara River Tented Camp (Comfort)
5

Full-Day Northern Serengeti & Mara River

A full day along the Mara River, watching for wildebeest and zebra crossings and the predators that trail them (crossings follow the herds' own schedule, not a fixed timetable). Even without one, this stretch of the park is good for general game viewing and sees far fewer vehicles than the south.

🏨 Overnight: Mara River Tented Camp (Comfort)
6

Northern to Central Serengeti

You'll begin heading south, game-driving back through the Serengeti's central plains, before settling in for one more night in the Seronera area.

🏨 Overnight: Seronera Plains Tented Camp (Comfort)
7

Serengeti to Arusha

One last morning game drive, then the drive back across the Ngorongoro Highlands and Karatu to Arusha, timed for your onward or departure flight.

When to take this safari

July to September is the classic window, when the herds are usually concentrated in the Northern Serengeti and crossings happen most often. October still offers decent odds as the herds start drifting south again. Movements shift from year to year depending on rainfall, so we check the latest reports before finalising your route to give you the best possible chance of seeing a crossing.
