Tour Overview

Starts on foot,
then settles into elephant and lion country

Most safaris keep you in the vehicle the whole time. This one opens differently, with a guided walking safari and a canoe outing in Arusha National Park, under the slopes of Mount Meru, before you ever get into the 4x4 properly. From there it's on to Tarangire's baobab country for the elephants, then three unhurried days in the Serengeti working the plains by vehicle. The mix of walking and driving makes for a more varied week than a straight game-drive itinerary, and you're in comfortable lodges and tented camps with full board the whole way.

When to take this safari

June to October brings the driest, clearest conditions, which suits both the walking safari at Arusha National Park and the game drives across Tarangire and the Serengeti. November's short rains green up Arusha's forest and thin out the crowds on the plains, while March to May, the long rains, is the cheapest time to travel, with big skies but wetter walking underfoot.
