This four-day trip trades some of the usual game drives for something more hands-on: a guided walking safari and canoe trip in Arusha National Park, a cultural walk through the village of Mto wa Mbu, and a full day inside the Ngorongoro Crater for proper Big Five viewing. If you want variety in how you see wildlife, on foot, from a canoe, and from a vehicle, this route fits all three into four days.
Safari HighlightsYour guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel for the short drive to Arusha National Park. You'll join an armed ranger for a walking safari through forest and grassland, on the lookout for giraffe, buffalo, warthog and colobus monkeys, then trade boots for a canoe on the Momella Lakes and drift among flamingos, hippos and waterbirds.
🏨 Overnight: Ngare Sero Lodge (Comfort)After breakfast you'll head to Mto wa Mbu, a farming village at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment known for its mix of tribes and cultures. A guided walk takes you through irrigated banana and rice farms, with stops at a local banana beer brewery, a wood carving workshop, and the village market.
🏨 Overnight: Karatu Acacia Tented Camp (Comfort)You'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn for a full day of game viewing, with lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo fairly reliable sightings and black rhino a possibility if you're lucky. Lunch is a picnic near the Lerai Forest, and you'll climb back out to Karatu in the late afternoon.
🏨 Overnight: Karatu Acacia Tented Camp (Comfort)A relaxed morning, then a transfer back to Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for your onward or departure flight.

June to October is the driest stretch and generally the most comfortable time for walking and canoe safaris in Arusha National Park, with clear views into the crater. November's short rains tend to be brief and rarely get in the way. March to May has the lowest rates of the year and lush, green scenery, though occasional showers can interrupt the canoe outing.
