Tour Overview

Wildlife and culture, comfortably
combined in three days

This short trip pairs two things northern Tanzania does well: solid wildlife viewing and a real look at daily life around Karatu. Day one is an afternoon with Tarangire's elephant herds, moving between the park's tall baobabs. On day two you step off the safari circuit to meet Iraqw farming families and walk through a working coffee estate, from picking to the cup. The trip closes with a full day inside the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the more wildlife-dense places in Africa. You'll stay in comfortable lodges and tented camps throughout, with an experienced driver-guide alongside you the whole way.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your three days in the wild

1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives south-west to Tarangire National Park. After a full-board lunch, you'll head out for an afternoon game drive through baobab country, following the riverbanks where Tarangire's elephant herds tend to gather, before continuing on to Karatu for the night.

🏨 Overnight: Karatu Acacia Tented Camp (Comfort)
2

Karatu Cultural Morning & Coffee Estate

The morning is a guided walk through farms and homesteads on the slopes around Karatu, where you'll meet Iraqw families and get a sense of daily rural life here. From there it's on to a working coffee estate, where you can follow the process from picking to roasting and finish with a cup made from beans grown on site. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax at your lodge before tomorrow's descent into the crater.

🏨 Overnight: Karatu Acacia Tented Camp (Comfort)

Full-Day Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha

You'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn for a full day of game viewing, with lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo fairly reliable sightings and black rhino a possibility if you're lucky. Lunch is a picnic near the Lerai Forest. In the late afternoon you climb back out for your transfer to Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

When to take this safari

June through October is the driest stretch and generally the easiest time to find wildlife in both Tarangire and the crater. November's short rains green things up without causing much disruption. March to May is the cheapest window of the year, with moody skies and a quieter crater floor, a fair trade if you don't mind the odd shower.
